An unknown poster for the 1920 German silent horror movie The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was sold at our November 3 poster auction in San Francisco for the price of $132,200. The item was offered during our bi-annual sale of 400+ vintage posters (www.posterconnection.com). The rare movie poster was bought by a private collector.

Before we offered this gem, only two different German Caligari posters were known to exist (one of them can be found in the New York Museum of Modern Art). The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is considered a landmark in silent film history and may be the most influential German expressionist film of all times, famous for its exceptional, wildly distorted stage designs. The poster sold on Saturday is the only copy known to exist. The sales price was a record price for a poster sold at our auctions. The previous record sale was for another German silent film poster, Pandora’s Box (1929). It fetched $70,700 back in 2004.
